This early international culinary guide offered traditional recipes from Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America alongside American recipes, tips on kitchen management and personal care. While traveling around the world with her husband on his navel assignments, Mary Louise began compiling recipes and domestic observations. She may have crossed paths with Elsie Hill in Washington.
Elsie Hill, leader in the fight for woman suffrage in the United States, who once went to jail for her beliefs, moved to Washington D.C. after finishing Vassar. There she met Alice Paul, a radical suffragist and one of the national leaders of the suffrage movement. In 1913, Paul recruited Elsie to join the Congressional Committee in planning the 1913 DC suffrage parade. During 1918-1919, Hill was arrested at least twice for her efforts. Handwritten recipes for Watermelon Pickle and Watermelon Preserves in Elsie Hill's hand (supported by letters held at Claremont College) laid in. Interior lightly toned.
