Samuel Lathem Mitchill (1764-1831) was an American physician and lawyer, and one of the nation's leading scholars. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Upon returning to the United States, Mitchill studied law and was admitted to the bar. From 1792 to 1801, Mitchill taught chemistry, botany, and natural history at New York City's Columbia College. He later helped to launch the Rutgers Medical School in New Jersey and was a founding editor of The Medical Repository, American's first medical journal. [Monticello.org]
This particular copy of The Medical Repository is unique owing to the fact there are four pages of handwritten notes, written by the owner of this book J.G. JOHNSTON, M.D. - his name is printed on the front free end paper. The doctor compiled a custom table of contents tracking the volume's most critical anomalies, epidepmic reports, and scientific debates such as: Period Medical Anomolies - notation of a case study featuring a 37 year old who may have a third testicle. The doctor was also interested in agriculture as he copied a multi-step receipt for boosting corn and wheat yeilds using saltpeter and "strong ley (lye)." Light to moderate toning and foxing.
