Item #4960 [RECIPE BOX] German American Recipes. Elisabeth Kramer.

[RECIPE BOX] German American Recipes

Bergen County, New Jersey: 1930s-1980s. A personalized wooden recipe box decorated with gold appliqué motifs and the number "50," featuring a typed German saying affixed to the inside of the lid - visable when the box is opened and forming a charming tableau.

Liebe, die von Herzen liebt,
Ist am reichsten, wenn sie gibt;
Liebe, die von Opfern spricht,
Ist schon rechte Liebe nicht.

Love that loves from
the heart is richest when it gives:
love that speaks of sacrifice is not true love.

The collection includes both clipped and handwritten recipes, in English and German. Maria Elisabeth (Butt) Kramer (1909-1997) was born in Germany and later emigrated to the United States, where she settled in Bergen County, New Jersey. She married John Kramer, a butcher, in 1934, and the couple had one son. Interestingly, the legible English recipes are largely devoid of meat dishes. Notable entries include Dandelion Wine, How to Prepare Chestnuts, Hot Potato Salad, and variety of fish recipes. Item #4960
