[COMMUNITY COOKBOOK] THE GREENWICH COOK BOOK
Greenwich, CT: The United Workers of Greenwich, Connecticut, 1910. Hardcover. 276 pp, 13pp 23 x 15 cm. Emerging from the Greenwich Aid Society (formed 1895), the United Workers of Greenwich was established to address social needs in the area during a period of rapid development and increased labor activity at the turn of the 20th century. Long before Greenwich became known as a haven for hedge funders and a bastion for bankers, it was a workingman's town. At the turn of the century, it was home to farmers and gardeners, stone masons, tinsmiths and carpenters, plumbers and construction workers - those who helped shape the gentleman farms and build the great estates. Many were immigrants from southern Europe who arrived in the late 1880s.
This community cookbook was established as a way to raise funds for a network of social service agencies. Filled with recipes that are attributed to members, we find a wide array of cookery featured here - from hearty New England fare to Spanish, Creole, and Eastern European recipes. Blank pages were provided for personal favorites and here, the previous owner wrote a few of her own. Two pages of handwritten notes focus on the care of furniture and one page of hand written recipes are laid in. At the rear of the book we find 13 pages of local advertisements. Some soiling to approx. 5 pages, otherwise clean. Boards soiled and rubbed at edges. [MARGARET COOK 46]. White canvas covered boards. Very good. Item #4873
