How to become an AIRLINE STEWARDESS
Minneapolis: Midwest Business Service, 1964. Paperback. 87 pp, plus 29pp appendix. 21 x 13.5 cm. Scarce occupational guide for women who wanted to work as flight attendants. The manual details entrance requirements, training, daily duties, and lifestyle expectations for would-be stewardesses. At the time, there were strict physical and personal requirements - height, weight, age limits, and single marital status. The guide put a huge emphasis on grooming, poise, and retaining a constant smile as the central theme towards gaining employment. Descriptions of training schools, uniforms, work schedules, and living arrangements are also covered. All these details underline how this profession was explicitly marketed as a feminized, appearance-regulated occupation. An underlying message was the reassurance that working as a stewardess was good preparation for a future marriage and homemaking - echoing period norms. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos. The last 29 pages feature an A-Z appendix of US and Canadian airlines routes at the time of printing. Interior clean, with some toning. Covers toned with light soiling, rubbed at edges, especially at head and tail of spine. 1 cm. loss to front bottom corner. Illustrated wraps. Very good. Item #4869
