THE RECORD WAR-TIME COOK BOOK
Philadelphia: THE PHILADELPHIA RECORD, 1918. Hardcover. 239 pages. 23.5 x 10.5 cm. This World War I home-front cookbook presented by the Philadelphia Record newspaper reflects the wartime conservation priorities of this period - saving wheat, meat, fats, and sugar - while maintaining pleasing middle-class meals. The previous owner took advantage of the blank pages placed throughout the book entitled "For Clippings" to add her own handwritten recipes that she indexed at the front of the book on the front free end paper. Recipes for Dandelion Wine, Elderberry Wine, Blossom Wine, Maud's Peach pudding, Aunt Florence's Jam Tarts, and many other handwritten recipes are added to aid in the campaign to stretch the household budget while assisting in the countries patriotic duty of budgeting and sacrifice. Handwritten and clipped recipes also laid in. Written on the front pastedown: "11-14-72 This was Grandmom's Cook Book". Boards heavily rubbed, hinges cracked but holding. Decorated oil cloth boards. Good. Item #4831
