THE UNIVERSAL RECEIPT BOOK; Being a Compendious Repository of Practical Information in Cookery, Preserving, Pickling, Distilling, and all the Branches of Domestic Economy, to which is added some Advice for Farmers
Philadelphia: Isaac Riley, 1818. Second Edition. Hardcover. 378 pages. 17 x 11 cm. This comprehensive household manual displays the enormous breadth of knowledge that was needed to run a home and farm in the early 1800s. The "domestic" labor that was required included cooking, distilling liquor, cleaning, making and maintaining clothing and furnishings, tending to the sick - both human and animal, and running a farm. The cookery section includes basic everyday dishes as well as more elaborate preparations, notably soups, meats, fish, puddings, cakes, and custards. Preserving and "putting up" food for later use is stressed - including condiments and spices. Other chapters include Distilling, Dying & Painting, Agriculture, and Medicine. This edition has a few annotations in pencil - interior lightly foxed, boards heavily rubbed but intact. Previous owners signature on front free end paper. [LOWENSTEIN 79]. Brown calf, red leather title on spine. Good. Item #4815
