SVENSK-AMERIKANSK KOKBOK samt RÅDGIFVARE FÖR SVENSKT TJENSTEFOLK I AMERIKA; SWEDISH-AMERICAN BOOK OF COOKERY and ADVISOR FOR SWEDISH SERVANTS IN AMERICA

Stockholm: A.L. NORMANS PRINTING COMP. 1882. Hardcover. 230 pages. 17.5 x 11 cm. Stamped: Swedish Employment Bureau, 178 Lexington Ave. Cor. 21st St., NY. This dual language book was most likely a necessity during the late 1800's. Widespread poverty and a rigid social structure, especially in the countryside, left many rural Swedes feeling trapped with little chance of advancement. Approximately 330,000 Swedes emigrated to the United States at this time - when the US economy was booming, creating a high demand for laborers. Includes a huge array of recipes as well as domestic instructions such as: Dinner is served on Sundays at half past one, The clothes ought to be ready for drying before three o'clock, Ring the first bell at half past seven (our copy has seven crossed out in pencil and written in Six o clock), etc. English title page disbound and heavily chipped but present. Interior toned. Boards heavily rubbed and chipped with tears at spine. Hinges cracked but holding. Brown boards, red cloth spine. Good. Item #4810
