[COMMUNITY COOKBOOK] POT LUCK
New York: THE NEW YORK CITY WOMEN'S COUNCIL OF THE NAVY LEAGUE OF THE U.S., 1942. Cover Design: Ernest Koenig. First Edition. Staplebound. 79 pages. 23 x 15 .5 cm. This community cookbook brings together recipes contributed by local residents alongside those from notable establishments such as the New York Herald Tribune, Pierre’s Restaurant, and the New York Exchange Restaurant, among others. During the war years, many of New York City’s prominent women united to support the national effort through the New York City Women’s Council of the Navy League. At their Shop and Workroom, located at 746 Madison Avenue, volunteers sewed and knitted garments and sold donated items to raise funds for the Navy Relief Society at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The Council also assisted in securing employment for the wives and widows of U.S. Navy servicemen.
Reflecting the realities of wartime rationing, the cookbook offers numerous substitutions for meat, cream, wine, and other scarce ingredients, helping home cooks adjust to limited supplies. As the editors explained, “We have tried to write for those who now have fewer servants—or none at all—who still wish to welcome their friends and entertain them simply and well.” Local advertisements appear throughout, adding to the period’s distinct character.Interior clean and crisp. Covers toned and lightly soiled. Mustard illustated wraps. Very good. Item #4775
