[COMMUNITY COOKBOOK] KITABU CHA UPISHI - THE COOK'S BOOK ; (A Swahili Cookery Book)

Nairobi: The Kenya Settlers' Cookery Book and Household Guide, 1962. 12th Edition. Staplebound. 64 pages. 22 x 13.5 cm. Produced by the St. Andrew’s Church Woman’s Guild in Nairobi, it was intended to train “African cooks and kitchen boys” in standards of domestic service that would, in the editors’ view, benefit both employer and employee within white settler households. Issued just before Kenya’s independence in 1963, the 1962 edition captures the final years of British and Scottish settler dominance and the social world of Nairobi’s white elite, including the notorious “Happy Valley” set, remembered for heavy drinking and lavish parties. Although earlier editions focused on reproducing British home cooking in East Africa, later versions incorporated some local elements while still centering European tastes and hierarchies in the kitchen. Interior toned. Recipes in Swahili with English translations for titles. Covers toned with front and back cover just holding. Salmon illustrated wraps. Good. Item #4762
