SOUTHERN COOKING; Personal handwritten recipes added by owner
New York: GROSSETT & DUNLAP, 1941. Second Edition. Hardcover. 384 pages. 21 x 14 cm. Henrietta Dull, longtime food columnist for the Atlanta Journal, shared recipes and techniques devoted to cooking “the Southern way.” As its title suggests, this classic volume celebrates Southern cuisine through a wide array of recipes—such as Barbecue, Waffles, Watermelon Sweet Pickles, Sweet Dixie Wafers, and Oyster Stew, among many others.
This particular copy is especially charming as what might be called a “personal copy.” Formerly owned by Marguerite (Storey) Cleveland (1918–2002), it served as her working manuscript. Throughout the book, Marguerite filled the margins and blank spaces with her own handwritten recipes, while also adding in numerous clippings, turning the volume into a living family document much like a household Bible.
Marguerite Storey, born in Tennessee, graduated from State Teachers College at Murfreesboro and went on to teach high school. In 1943 she married Harry Cleveland of Miami; they later lived in Coral Gables, Florida, and divorced in 1964.
The book features the original owner’s signature and a bookstore label on the illustrated endpapers. Hinges cracked but holding; covers rubbed. A good, well-loved copy of a Southern classic. [BROWN 514, first edition]. Blue cloth covered boards. Good. Item #4707
