[CALIFORNIA] frozen desserts by samarkand
San Francisco: THE SAMARKAND COMPANY, c. 1925. Staplebound. Samarkand frozen specialties included mousses, Italian spumoni, ice cream pies, and elaborate frozen dessert rolls & molds - all sold in California - San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Oakland. This pamphlet also describes the ability to deliver these products with "ingeniously designed cartons, refrigerated with solidified carbon dioxide, commonly know as 'Dry Ice'".
The Samarkand Frozen Specialties company was founded during Prohibition by Jacob Paul Rettenmayer (1881-1937), a German emigre, and naturalized American citizen, who rose through the ranks of the Brewing industry. As General Manager of the California Brewing Association, Rettenmayer was always interested in diverse business opportunities and leapt at the chance to diversify his business dealings during the lean years of Prohibition.
