This book is one of the first to highlight farm-fresh and locally sourced foods, especially those available in California. Notably, this imprint was published by the WOMEN'S CO-OPERATIVE PRINTING OFFICE, thought to be the first women-owned printing business in California.

As noted in CALIFORNIA IN THE KITCHEN (California Gastronomical Imprints 1870-1932) - early California cook books remained "Eastern" centered for some time until Clayton's Quaker Cook-Book "gave us a recipe for cooking California quail, and has a 'celebrated California salad dressing,' as well as telling us how to 'cook steak California style of 1849-50'". Raised on a farm, Clayton assisted his mother in the household kitchen which instilled in him the deep, practical knowledge for preparing nourishing food.

Along with many other advertisements at the rear of the book, the WOMEN'S Co-operative Printing Office has a full page ad - promoting their Commercial Printing, Book Binding, Paper Ruling and Society Work. Author's photo on frontispiece missing. Former owner's stamp on front free end paper. Interior clean and crisp, boards lightly rubbed at edges. [GLOZER 65] [BROWN 32].
