The Housekeeper's Receipt Book; Breakfast Dinner & Tea

New York: 1880. Sewn binding. 32 pages. 16 x 10 cm. A receipt book and calendar in one - with recipes, household hints, and practicle advice along with testimonials. The products include: Centaur Liniments, Pitcher's Castoria, Wei DeMeyer's Catarrh Cure. Originally invented by Dr. Samuel Pitcher in 1868, Castoria played a significant role in shaping medicine trends, especially in the patent medicine industry. Castoria was marketed as a safe and effective laxative and stomach soother for infants and children, emphasizing that it was free from narcotics such as opium or morphine, common in medicines of the era. Castoria's success reflected broader trends in the late 19th and early 20th centuries toward mass marketing of patent medicines that could be sold directly to consumers without prescriptions. It contributed to the growth of the proprietary medicine industry and exemplified the early use of brand loyalty, trademark protection, and emotional advertising in pharmaceuticals. Interior, light foxing, otherwise clean. Wraps very lightly soiled. Incredibly clean and crisp for ephemera from the 1880's. Color illustrated wraps, with original string. Very good. Item #4679
