Just months later, in 1820, Maine separated from Massachussetts and was admitted as a state. At the time, Hallowell was a bustling town with industries such as logging, trade, publishing, and shipbuilding. Later in the 19th century, the community thrived in the ice trade, employing more than a thousand workers and exporting frozen blocks as far as Cuba via local schooners.
