Hallowell, Mass. E. Goodale, 1819. Wraps. 16 pages. 21 x 13.75 cm. A compolete sermon by Eliphalet Gillet, pastor of the First Church in Hallowell. Just months later, in 1820, Maine separated from Massachussetts and was admitted as a state. At the time, Hallowell was a bustling town with industries such as logging, trade, publishing, and shipbuilding. Later in the 19th century, the community thrived in the ice trade, employing more than a thousand workers and exporting frozen blocks as far as Cuba via local schooners.
