[MENU] [OHIO] Glass Bowl Restaurant; We Invite You to the "TOPS in FOOD"
Bexley, Ohio: c.1939. Cards. This folding, illustrated menu from the Columbus-Bexley area is truly a throwback. One of the owner's of this establishment attended college at USC in southern California at the height of the exotic and outlandish architectural drive-in craze. During a Christmas vacation home to Bexley, he convinced a couple of friends to join forces and build a restaurant which would be called, "The Glass Bowl". A gem of art deco design, this small but innovative restaurant's building was to resemble an inverted champagne goblet. Glass bricks imported from Belgium were one of the many architectural highlights. Seating a mere 18 customers, the true experience was outside where patrons parked in their automobiles could receive "curb service" - with trays attached to lowered car windows. The Glass Bowl Hamburger (for 10 cents) was the star attraction along with the "Mel-O Steak Sandwich", the "Southern Mammy Waffle", homemade chili, malts, sodas, and pies. Unfortunately, the building was razed in 1968 to build a two story office complex. Very lightly soiled and creased. Green, heavy textured cards, illustrated. Very good. Item #4628
