[MANUSCRIPT] [COOKBOOK] Bowker Fertilizer Co. Calendar and Memorandum Book

Buffalo: c.1902. Staplebound. 23 pages. 15.5 x 9 cm. Young Anna Meyers, who was 16 or 17 at the time she utilized this Calendar book (published by the Bowker Fertilizer Co.) to commit to paper her own recipes. Anna's handwriting is easy to read and very neat. She uses the lined paper to jot down many cake, cookie, biscuit, pudding, and pickle recipes. It is interesting to note that most of her recipes do not give cooking times as that was probably something she knew by heart or by touch. One recipe that stands out is the "Pork Cake" which is a sweet cake made with pork. On the first page of this booklet, Anna provides her address and states, in case of emergency, notify "my parents, at the above address given." When asked to state the nearest telephone, Anna writes - "Hermans Saloon." Anna was part of a large German community in the area and ended up marrying a fellow German, Edward Brock.
