[MANUSCRIPT] [COOKBOOK] Virginia Brown's Cook Book

Attleboro, Massachusetts: c. 1950s. Wraps. 158 pages. 21 x 18 cm. Virginia Lee [Fish] Brown (1918-1989) lived her entire life in Attleboro, Massachusetts. This handmade cookbook is a glimpse into a very well organized homemaker who took pride in her recipes - there is an index at the beginning of the book. Virginia's handwriting is superb and she made an effort to describe how to make a specific recipe better, for instance: when describing how to make a roast: "test with fork (in case you can't tell stick a knife or skewer into meat if rare you will see blood) take out meat - put water in roaster (about 1 inch) boil up on top burner - thicken with flour & water & you're all done. This usually makes real brown gravy." Virginia writes her recipe instructions as if she is speaking and teaching someone. She reports on how good a recipe is and the exact servings a recipe will make. One can tell she was conscious of cost and made sure to get the most out of every ingredient. There are 20-30 recipes (handwritten and clipped) laid in. Front cover detached. Marbled wraps, spiral bound. Good. Item #4594
