London: S. Crowder and H. Woodgate, at the Golden Ball in Paternoster Row, c. 1760. Hardcover. Two volumes complete - Volume One: [2], 3-752 pages & Volume Two - [2] 469 pages, [33], 7 plates. Volume Two - Jill Norman's bookplate, Elizabeth David's Editor. Engraved frontispiece and seven engraved plates by B. Cole (Benjamin Cole). Martha Bradley's work had significant influence on later cookbooks and culinary practices: 1) Bradley introduces a sophisticated organizational structure and teaching strategies - beginning with basic techniques, Bradley progressively moves to more complex dishes, setting a new standard for culinary education. 2) Bradley divided her book into monthly sections, introducing a seasonal approach to cooking that was later adopted by other authors. 3) In The British Housewife, Bradley was one of the few female British 18th-century authors to support the French style of nouvelle cuisine, influencing later cookbooks. In Volume One, David has four "post it" notes - commenting on preserving "Quince's in February?", Syllabub and How to set a Table, "eggs with orange, an unusual dish", and "Moonshine & Floating Island". Volume Two has 2 "post it' notes and penciled inscriptions on the verso of front cover. Pages lightly toned at front and rear, hinges cracked but holding. Some (1/2 cm) loss to tail of spine on Volume Two. [VICAIRE 111] [BITTING 55] [CAGLE 574]. Paneled calf, raised bands with brown morocco label. Very good. Item #4551
