[REPURPOSED] Book of Handwritten Farming and Health Recipes; Book written in: MARSHALL'S COMMERCIAL POCKET BOOK, For 1830

London: W. MARSHALL, c. 1910-1945. Leather_bound. 216 pages. (78 pages repurposed) 16 x 11 cm. This pocket book is a fine example of how everyday notebooks were reused or “repurposed” throughout the 19th century. In this instance, a determined hand filled its blank pages with practical knowledge essential to life on a farm. Believed to originate from Cumbria, England—within the Lake District—the volume reflects a distinctly rural and resourceful mindset. The author demonstrated admirable organization, devoting three pages to an index of recipes, remedies, and household or farm essentials. Most entries are neatly written in cursive, with additional recipes and remedies pasted in from printed sources. Among the subjects recorded are Green Fly Spray, Worms in Horses, Salve for Wounds, Bacon Curing, Sausage Making, Black Pudding, Grafting Wax for Fruit Trees, Beer with a “Kick,” and Raising Young Chicks, among many others. The writer also included a hand-drawn diagram showing the appearance of a horse’s teeth at various ages, accompanied by descriptive notes. Overall, a well-preserved and entirely legible record of 19th-century rural ingenuity. Red leather pocket book. Very good. Item #4520
