[BALTIMORE] OYSTER ADVERTISING PACKET
Baltimore: 1916. 28 x 21 1/2 cm. A turn of the century look at a thriving Oyster Packing company, Louis Grebb. An illustrated sales letter promoting their Belle Brand Baltimore Shucked Fresh Oysters. Also included is a pre-addressed postcard and envelope for placing an order for the freshly packed 1, 3, and 5 gallon cans of "Choice Standards, Mediums, Best Extra Selects, and Counts" version - shipped with ice or regular cans of "Belle Counts, Extra Selects and Standards." At this time, hundreds of packinghouses competed for dock space and consumer adoration. Transported by rail, these cans brought the brackish taste of the Bay to hungry Americans across the country. Grebs fruit and oyster packing business occupied a three-story, three-building complex on the Inner Harbor just south of the present day Convention Center. There, during oyster season, he employed 50 shuckers to process over 600 gallons of oysters each day during the oyster season. During the summer months, the company switched to packing fruit. Letter lightly creased, otherwise clean and crisp. Illustrated letter, envelope, and postcard. Very good. Item #4488
