Images of Contentment: John Frederick Kensett and the Connecticut Shore
Waterbury, Connecticutt: The Mattatuck Museum, 2001. Wraps. 45 pages. Contentment Island is located between two small coastal rivers, the Goodwives River and Five Mile River, which had been commercial centers for fishing and shipping in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. John Frederick Kensett (1816-1872) was recognized in his own time, as he is in ours, as an American Master, an artist who changed the way the American landscape was seen and painted. Kensett could not forsee that 35 acres in Darien, Connecticut, would alter his art and life forever. When his friend and fellow painter Vincent Colyer (1825-1888) began to aquire land in 1866 at a place on Long Island and renamed it "Contentment Island", Kensett followed his friend and that was history. This catalog features stunning illustrations of the work from this period along with essays and endnotes and maps. Interior clean, wrappers rubbed at edges. Color illustrated wraps. Very good.
