The Gay Cookbook; Campy Cartoons by David Costain
Los Angeles: SHERBOURNE PRESS, 1965. First Edition. Hardcover. 280 pages. 26 x 18 cm. True first edition, large format. "The complete compendium of campy cuisine and menus for men... or what have you."Louis Randall, aka Chef Lou Rand Hogan, was surely ahead of his time when he wrote this fun filled cookbook, composed primarily in prose style. After a failed theatre career in the 1920's, Chef Lou signed on with the Matson cruise ship line as a steward and cook. It was here, while traveling the world, Hogan was not only learning about high-class continental cooking, but he was also becoming immersed in "camp" culture. This well written cookbook is filled with jokes and innuendos of the time. Even on the frontispiece, in the book's first pages, a line reads "All rights reserved, Mary." Our copy has a word scribbled next to Mary which is a mystery to us. Some stains to the interior. Illustrated cloth cover is rubbed at the edges with a good amount of soiling. Color illustrated cloth covered boards. Good. Item #4381
