[COMMUNITY COOKBOOK] The Bronxville Women's Club; Sponsored by THE HOME-MAKING DEPARTMENT
Bronxville, New York: The BRONX VALLEY PRESS, 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. 141 pages. 23 x 15.5 cm. Recipes attributed to members, although, as was the custom at the time, most of the club members used their married name (ex. Mrs. Leon Bailey). A few recipes are attributed to women with their given name. The cookbook sets out in a familiar manner, with hors d'oeuvres, canapés, and soups and then is followed by SUNDY NIGHT SUGGESTIONS - we can only presume that this was when the lady of the house had to step in for the help. One handwritten recipe laid in for Pecan Pie. The last page consists of a photocopy letter/recipe from the Minister to Denmark, Ruth Bryon Owen. Owen was the first woman to represent the United States in a foreign country as part of a diplomatic delegation. From 1933 to 1936, Owen served as the US Ambassador to Denmark, appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Bronxville Women's Club named Ruth Bryon Owen the "First Honorary Member of The Bronxville Women's Club." Some light stains throughout. Pages lightly toned. Covers lightly rubbed at edges. Green embossed and illustrated boards. Very good. Item #4337
