[MENU] [WASHINGTON DC] [WOMEN] The DODGE Hotel; Chef's Special Dinner - April 24, 1940

Washington DC: 1940. Cards. 26.5 x 20 cm. During and after World War I there was a dramatic increase in size of the departments in the federal government in Washington, D.C., and the corresponding need for workers meant a need for housing, especially single women moving into the city. The Grace Dodge Hotel was built by the YWCA and named after one of the founders. In the 1920's it was staffed almost completely by women and allowed only women to be accommodated. Some of the amenities included special suites for mothers, with heaters for baby's milk. There was a nurse on call, to be paid by the hour. Another novel practice instituted in the hotel and restaurant was the rule of NO TIPPING. By the 1940's, when this menu was printed, the hotel was no longer just for women but it does state on the menu - no tipping. A specialty page is clipped in with options including: Baked Half Spring Chicken, Fresh Shad Roe sautéed with Bacon, Roast Prime Ribs, Roast Stuffed Leg of Veal, and Broiled Fresh Potomac Shad. The building was razed in 1972. Black and white illustration of the Capitol Building on cover. Cover lightly toned, with a couple of tape marks to the interior. Photo illustrated cards. Very good.
