[CULINARY] [MANUSCRIPT] Handwritten Cookbook
Rockland, ME: c. 1940-60's. Hardcover. 88 pages. 28 x 21 cm. One can tell, looking at Martha's cookbook, she LOVED to bake. There are over 35 pie recipes, over 40 cake recipes, and many cookie, bread, and muffin recipes to round out the baking side of her writing. Along with baking, Martha had over 20 different type of pickle recipes and many entree recipes. One recipe for "Hogs Head Cheese" begins with: Split the head open and take out the brains, dig out the eyes. The recipe calls for the WHOLE hog including the ears, feet, and tongue. In the 1930's Martha is married and living with her husband and son. By the 1950's, Martha is separated from her husband and has taken on a boarder and working as a Chambermaid. Laid in are over 75 recipes, both handwritten and cut out, as well as an IOU to the bank, a check from her boarder, and laundry slips. Book is made from a binder filled with lined paper. Covers rubbed and frayed, paper is holding. Black faux leather boards. Good. Item #4255
