[HANDMADE] [MENNONITE] COOKBOOK
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada: c.1940's. Sewn binding. 32 pages. 21 x 13 cm. A handmade, hand sewn book made out of white oil cloth and paper. On the interior of the front page, written in pencil, reads: "Warkenton Sisters Cookbook." With 57 recipes handwritten (one in German), and at least three different hands, this homemade cook book must have filled a great need in the Warkentin family's kitchen. We know that by the mid 1800's there were at least 20 Menonite families with the last name Warkentin living in the Winnipeg area. These German-speaking Mennonites lived a modest life, farming and living off the land. In this cookbook we find recipes for making Dandelion Wine, Cream Cheese, Sausage, Pickles, Soda Biscuits, as well as Cakes, Cookies, James, Pies, and Beans. A recipe, cut out of a German language paper, is laid in. White oil cloth. Good. Item #4254
