[MANUSCRIPT] [CULINARY] Clarksburg, West Virginia

Clarksburg, West Virginia: 1908. Hardcover. 22 x 15 cm. Lucy Clare Clifford (1887-1961) was a 21 year old young woman when she set about writing down her recipes. One can see she was very interested in candy/confection making and was exceptionally precise as to the exact directions logged in her personal cookbook. Lucy's handwriting is impeccable and the organization of this book is well ordered. The beginning of the book consists of 21 candy/confection recipes including a methodical account for making the base "foundation cream" used in many confection recipes. The next chapter in her book is made up of 18 cake/cookies/filling recipes, many attributed to possible friends, neighbors, or family members. There are 4 recipes, laid in, all handwritten. Lucy went on to marry Marcus Bond in 1912, had three children (one dying as an infant) and eventually moving to the Grosse Pointe area of Michigan. Covers heavily rubbed but holding. Interior shows some food stains. Front cover has a marbled paper that looks to be added as the front boards is missing. Boards. Good. Item #4234
