[SHEET MUSIC] L' OR-KINA Hymne; Offert a Ses Clients

Paris: CREVEL, c.1889. Wraps. 4 pages. 26 x 18 cm. L' Or-Kina Sabatier, an apertif wine with quinine, originated in France after the country invaded Algeria in 1830. Fierce fighting left the French with high casualties but another enemy was malaria. Quinine, extracted from the bark of the Peruvian Cincnona tree was, and still is, a remedy used to combat malaria. As the taste of quinine is very bitter, the French government funded a competition to create wine-based palatable tonics infused with high levels of quinine to deliver this life saving tonic to the general public. Michel Sabatier, originally a tax agent, established a distillery in Carcassone in 1885 and came up with L'Or-kina, and quickly enjoyed resounding success with this "restorative" wine. Covers and interior lightly toned. Text in French. Cream illustrated wraps. Very good. Item #3926
