Catherine was the daughter of Lyman Beecher and the sister of Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe. This book was Beecher's major work and went through 15 editions. Treatise was the first American work to deal with all aspects of domestic life, helping to standardize domestic practices and reinforce domestic values. Beecher agrued that a woman's proper role was in the home where she could powerfully affect American society. Interior lightly foxed, hinges cracked but holding. Covers rubbed, especially at spine. From the culinary collection of Carl G. Sontheimer, the man who revolutionized American cooking by bringing the Cuisinart to the United States.
