Catherine was the daughter of Lyman Beecher and the sister of Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe. This book was Beecher's major work and went through 15 editions. Treatise was the first American work to deal with all aspects of domestic life, helping to standardize domestic practices and reinforce domestic values. Beecher argued that a woman's proper role was in the home where she could powerfully affect American society. Interior clean, hinges cracked but holding. Spine missing fabric.
