[TRADE CATALOG] CATALOGUE OF GREENHOUSE HEATING & VENTILATING APPARATUS; Horticultural Architects and Builders, Steam and Hot Water Heating Engineers

New York: Lord and Burnham Co., 1899. Oversized paperback. 79 pages. 25.5 x 20 cm. In 1849, Frederick A. Lord, a carpenter, began building wood and glass greenhouses for his customers in Buffalo, NY. By 1856, Lord had enough work to make this his full-time profession and moved his business to Syracuse and then to Irvington, NY to be closer to his wealthy customers in the Hudson river area. In 1876 Lord's son-in-law joined the firm. Their first major commission came from the California philanthropist James Lick. Later, the firm constructed the first steel-framed curvilinear greenhouse in the United States for railroad magnate Jay Gould - now located on the property of Lyndhurst, in Tarrytown, NY.

This trade catalogue is incredibly informative - discussing all the factors of Greenhouse Heating. Along with detailed illustrations, the catalogue contains in depth descriptions of the inner workings of each type of heater available. Pages of testimonials fill the final pages of the catalogue as well as references such as: J. Pulitzer of Bar Harbor ME, Harvard University/Cambridge, Smith College/Northampton, J. Pierpont Morgan Morgan of Highland Falls, NY, Wm. Astor or Rhinebeck, Cornelius Vanderbilt of Newport, John Jacob Astor or Newport, The Executive Mansion in Washington, D.C., The U.S. Botanical Garden in Washington, D.C., and many, many more.
