Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, Herb Medicine, Pills for Constipation, and Sanative Wash. Lydia Estes Pinkham started her business in her kitchen in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1873. The herbal compound she invented was created to relieve menstrual discomfort and menopausal symptoms in women. The original recipe included black cohosh, life root, unicorn root, pleurisy rood, and fenugreek seed - along with alcohol. Pinkham and her sons went on to package and distribute her products.
