New Mexico: 2022. beeswax, hand-dyed thread,
1/2" MDF panel

Medium / Ingredients
1/2" MDF panel cut to 15 1/2" x 24 1/2" dimension, 4 c beeswax
1 1/2 c gesso with a splash of turmeric tea
1 1/2 c gesso with a splash of red wine
1 1/2 c gesso with a splash of espresso
3 peeled red beets, 1 c blueberries, 1 c shredded red cabbage, 1 c red onion skins, white vinegar
Process / Directions
draw 2 horizontal lines with pencil on MDF panel
paint 3 coats of the gesso with turmeric on upper section
paint 3 coats of the gesso with red wine on middle section
paint 3 coats of the gesso with espresso on bottom section
bring beets, blueberries, cabbage and onion skins separately to boil
in 3" of water, simmer at low temperature for up to 2 hours
strain liquids separately into 16 ounce mason jars, add 2 tablespoons
of white vinegar to each, set aside
cut cotton thread into desired lengths, un-twine each strand, evenly
distribute strands onto your liquid/dye filled mason jars, set aside for up to 3 days
take thread out of mason jars, squeeze out excess liquid, lay flat on a towel to dry
melt beeswax in a double boiler or crockpot
use an 1/8" brush to apply melted beeswax as evenly as possible onto your MDF panel
imbed each individual strand of thread into the wax using the back side of a metal spoon
until desired composition is achieved.
