Newport, RI: 1881. Loose_leaf. Folded - 8.5 x 17 cm. Open - 34 x 20 cm. James Stevens was a carriage maker residing in Newport, RI during the mid to late 1800's. This letter, sent to Osmond Wood of Dartmouth, contains the full recipe for making Copal Varnish which was used on for horse-drawn vehicles. Osmond Wood was a farmer in Dartmouth and was a family friend of Stevens. Lightly foxed, previously folded. Handwritten ink on linen paper. Very good. Item #3607
