Item #3605 [CULINARY] [BOOKPLATE] JULIA PERRIN HINDLEY; From the Library of CORA, ROSE and BOB BROWN

[CULINARY] [BOOKPLATE] JULIA PERRIN HINDLEY; From the Library of CORA, ROSE and BOB BROWN

Loose_leaf. 9.5 X 6 cm. A fancifully designed bookplate that brings four culinary writers and historians together on one small piece of paper. The bookplate designed for Internationally known home economist, radio & TV personality Julia Perrin Hindley depicts a goose wearing a toque. Julia, aka "Julie Lee Wright" - her stage name to her radio listeners and TV viewers - used this image for her personal collection of cookbooks, reported to be in the thousands. Cora, Rose and Bob Brown, or "The Browns" - were authors of over a dozen outstanding cookbooks and bibliographies. Cora was Bob's mother and Rose was Bob's wife. Together the three traveled extensively, all the while acquiring the knowledge of the exotic regions traveled and lived. After Cora and Rose died, Bob left his mountain home in Brazil and moved to New York, where he married Eleanor Parker in 1953. Brown ran a shop called Bob Brown's Books in Greenwich village and co-authored (with Eleanor) Culinary Americana, one of the best known bibliographies of American Culinary History. We can only surmise that the Browns bought Julia Perrin Hindley's collection and used these bookplates to designate the provenance. Light foxing to front corners, verso foxed. Illustrated woodcut, black ink. Very good. Item #3605
