In the 18th century menopause began to be treated as a disease or dysfunction, leading up to the creation of the term "la ménespause" in 1812. "While the English physician John Fothergill was the first to author an article on the cessation of menses, it was French doctors who invented the word la ménopause, and who elaborated it profusely throughout the nineteenth century, while other medical cultures remained largely silent on the matter until the early twentieth century."
