THEPURE Cook Book, compiled by the owner and principal of the Greater New York Cooking School, Gesine Lemcke, was obtained by customers of THEPURE Baking Powder, as the footnotes instruct, by sending in their name and address to the company with three two cent stamps enclosed. Inside are hundreds of recipes utilizing the cream of tartar based baking powder, alongside slanderous claims about their competing phosphate-based baking powders and endorsements of the products. THEPURE Baking Power’s name is an interesting sign of the beginnings of brand marketing, in the way it confronts the claims of wholesomeness and purity from other brands on the market.
