[CORRESPONDENCE SCHOOL] [COSMETOLOGY] Collection of 1920's Advertising Materials from the Marsay School of Beauty Culture

Chicago: Marsay School of Beauty Culture. A collection of material from Marsay School of Beauty Culture correspondence school, based in Chicago, exhibiting world class fictitious claims to provide a speedy path to profit and expertise as a Beauty Culturist. For only $20, and an additional $8.65, the school would furnish students with eight lessons and a Marsay Diploma that promised to assist every graduate with an income of $2000 to $5000 a year. While the school was successful in heavily marketing themselves throughout the United States, their false claims caught the eye of the Federal Trade Commission and by the early 1930's the company was continuously brought to court. This collection includes a 20-page illustrated catalog containing sample lessons, testimonials and endorsements; a price list for supplies; an "application for membership" (enrollment form sent with first payment); a three page promotional letter sent to students that had requested information; a booklet urging students to sign up before regulators change rules in various states; and a return mailing envelope. Catalog is worn at edges with closed tears to head and tail of spine, all other material is in good condition. Item #2640
