The Hand-Book of The Laundry

London: W.S. Orr & Co., 1839. First Edition. Card_book. 140 (4) pages. Seven illustrations, including one full-page illustration of irons. "Let Thisby have clean linen" - Shakespeare (on title page). Guidance and instructions on washing cotton stockings, silks, muslin, stain removal, ironing, making starch, drying, and restoring scorched linen. An amazingly useful manual in these quarantine times - one must be able to wash the kid gloves. Author states: "wash every fortnight" and "putting away dirty linen increases the tendency to fermentation" - could be a good vehicle for a sourdough starter! Part of the "Hand-Book for People Series." Binding lightly worn, minor dampstaining to lower margins of endpapers. A very good copy of a scarce Domestic Manual. Publisher's limp black cloth, stamped and lettered in gilt on front cover. Very good. Item #2164
