[PATENT MEDICINE] [ALMANAC] Morning Noon and Night; For 1871-71. Third Year...

New York: P.H. Drake & Co., 1871. Sewn binding. Unpaginated. [48] pages. 21 x 14 cm. Filled with tall tales, nonsensical facts - something like Fake News of the late 19th century, P.H. Drake & Co. primary product, Plantation Bitters, was sold as a cure all but was fundamentally alcohol. Sold in a distinctive bottle with logcabin sides, Plantation Bitters claimed to restore health, invigorate lady invalids, cure malarious fevers, along with a multitude of false assertions. This product was one of many during this era to pray upon the public's lack of medical knowledge and willingness to believe the big lie of cleverly illustrated advertising. An added component of promotion, this booklet included the horoscope for 1871, an Almanac, recipes, remedies, and advertisements for other fraudulent products. Exceptional series of narrative engravings illustrating the "start to finish" production process at the manufacturing plant. Back cover printed: Sold by FERDINAND SMITH/525 High St., Providence, R. Island/DRUGGIST and CHEMIST. Light soiling to wraps and interior. Color illustrated wraps. Very good. Item #2153
