Widtsoe (1874-1965), granddaughter of Brigham Young, LDS Church's second President, recognized the need to educate rural farm women with the intention of improving the health of the community. Widtsoe and her husband, John A. Widtsoe, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles (LDS Church), co-wrote The Word of Wisdom, a Modern Interpretation (1937), incorporating the practice of healthy eating habits as part of the Church's teachings.
