[MANUSCRIPT] [SEWING] [STUDENT WORK] Cours de Couture

Montreal: Couvent de la Congrégation de Notre-Dame, 1857. Hardcover. Unpaginated. 20.5 x 26 cm. A handwritten and unique book of examples used to teach a sewing class at the Convent of the Congregation of Notre-Dame in Montreal, Quebec. Instructed by sister Louise Rogers, this book includes examples of stitches, sewn fabrics, and botanical specimens used presumably for reference and inspiration. Also pasted in, an intricate greeting card with ornamental fabric and die-cut flowers - all in a religious genre.
While the name Montreal had become largely popular by the time this book was written, the writers opted for the name Ville-Marie, which the convent had been founded under in the 17th century. The congregation was founded by Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys in pursuit of children’s education and the development of Montreal, and she created the first school in Montreal as well as aided in the construction of the first chapel of Montreal. She was later canonized in 1982 by John Paul II and became the first Canadian saint. With their teaching the congregation became the first non-cloistered religious community in North America. They continue to teach several fields today in several countries.
Boards heavily rubbed at edges. Black embossed patterned paper with brown cloth spine. Very Good. Item #3309
